February 2017's featured winner:

Paul Byham — FOSTHM

About the Image

Stern oblique 3D view of the Liberty ship James Eagan Layne lying on the bottom of Whitsand Bay in Cornwall. Image was submitted by Paul Byham, hydrographic trainer to the Royal Navy at the Hydrographic and Meteorological School, FOST-HM, HMS Drake in Plymouth, UK. Paul teaches on the IHO accredited Cat A and Cat B course, his specialty being multibeam sonar. This fantastic image was created with data collected as a training exercise.

The data was collected onboard the vessel Pat Barton with a Kongsberg EM2040C multibeam with POSMV for motion compensation and primary positioning provided by C-Nav.

The positioning data was further improved using POSPAC. The multibeam data was processed in CARIS HIPS and SIPS 9.1 and a CUBE surface of the wreck generated using a 0.3m cell size. Vertical control was achieved using GPS tide and the UKHO’s VORF model.
