Designed to provide you with the understanding and skills to create and manage nautical paper charts using the Paper Chart Composer software program. Learn how to create and populate charts; add borders, marginalia, text and other cartographic features; mask features; validate chart contents; and, export and print completed charts.

Description 

This self-paced online training course introduces the subject of Nautical Chart Production using the CARIS Paper Chart Composer desktop software program. The course covers the same topics and includes the same exercises as the equivalent classroom training course. However, it lets you go through the materials at your own pace, using your own computer with internet access, from your desktop, and without having to attend a classroom training course in another location.

24 hours (estimated – completion time will vary based on experience).

Audience 

All those individuals involved in nautical chart production who wants to learn about digital chart production and work with the CARIS Paper Chart Composer software. This includes people who will be managing, compiling, checking and completing charts in a digital environment within a hydrographic organization or other company. It is also of interest to students or others wishing to learn about chart production and about Paper Chart Composer. 

This introductory course is also of interest to anyone who will be using the related CARIS HPD Paper Chart Editor database software program.

Course Materials 

This self-paced online training course makes use of different types of complementary materials including: 

  • Introductory text with relevant screen captures

  • Practical step-by-step exercises based on downloadable datasets 
  • Multiple choice assessments to review what you have learned

Prerequisites 

This is an introductory training course. No previous experience working with CARIS software is required. Ideally, all participants will: 

  • Be familiar with operating Windows computers and software including using an internet browser 
  • Have an understanding or previous working experience creating nautical charts in a digital production environment 
  • Already have some basic knowledge of the IHO S-57 Standard – this is helpful but is not required (this is not covered in the course)
