About the Image

In April 2016, The Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) was conducting training off the coast of Chemainus, B.C., Canada. As part of the exercise, they chose to run a multibeam sounding of an artificial reef in the area.

The unique reef, which is a former Canadian Airlines Boeing 737, was sank purposely on January 14, 2006 by Peter Luckham and the Artificial Reef Society of B.C. The plane was installed on pedestals to allow divers the opportunity to explore and swim around it completely. Click here to find out more information on how this was accomplished.

The plane was surveyed by the Canadian Hydrographic Service (C. Lessels, T. Dill), Pacific Region, in April of 2016, using a Kongsberg Simrad EM2040C mounted on the Canadian Coast Guard Cutter (CCGC) Otter Bay (A. Keene, S. Olcen). The data was processed using CARIS HIPS. The pedestals were removed from the data set to give the plane the illusion of flying across the sea floor.
