Passing of ECDIS pioneer Mike Eaton

It is with great sadness that we learn of the recent passing of scientist and former Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) employee, Mike Eaton.

In the late '80s CARIS worked with CHS on an ECDIS test bed project led by Mike Eaton. The research that Mike did with CARIS in the '80s and early '90s contributed to the development of the S-52 Specifications for Chart Content and Display Aspects of ECDIS. Mike was relentless in his pursuit to develop the presentation library for ECDIS. The presentation library has seen very little alterations in the twenty years since its development. This is a true testament of Mike's expertise and signifies his contribution to the world of electronic navigation.

A number of CARIS employees have fond memories of working with Mike on the ECDIS research project. For many Mike was a mentor and friend. He was well respected by all and will not be forgotten.
